Graduate School Admission Results

TTPB: While I agree with the person below about how connections matter and also about the second option of paying your way into a PhD by doing a masters at top 5-10 CS schools, I don't see connections playing a factor in the process being unique to CMU and not every school. Fuck it, not even grad schools, industry is the exact same: connections and your network matter. I would say that most people realize that after a couple years in industry but for those applying to grad schools right out of undergrad, they get to experience earlier than their peers who went to work instead of grad school. And cause of ML/AI hype, the number of applicants is so much that a person who would have been a star candidate 5-10 years ago does not get accepted this cycle or even interviewed. and to the post further below about deferrals, from every school I have interviewed with, the idea that everyone isn't getting cause of people deferring is bullshit. You just have to come terms with the fact that ML hype has made CS exponential crowded and instead of 1-2 extremely overqualified applicants (ie: 4+ NIPS/ICLR/ICML papers), you now have 20-30 of these applicants resulting into the minimum bar to get in increase dramatically. Really the only question left to see is that if this cycle was a 1 time thing or is the bar just going to exponentially increase. Here's to hoping for AI winter #3...

Applied for the MIIS program on the November 19th deadline. Got a reject today via e-mail at 3 AM IST. 1 paper submitted to an international conference which was rejected and work-ex of almost 2 years at a top MNC. Average GPA and GRE. Does anyone know why the decisions for rejects came in so late?

Stop blaming deferrals for not getting accepted. I have spoken to people at CMU and in the departments I checked, the deferrals were minimal.. and they added spaces to make the impact minimal. CMU is on par with Stanford and MIT when it comes to cs so it is highly selective. Almost none are that good that they have a 100% shot with CMU, and sorry to say it, you are most likely not one of them. Stay humble and recognize that you just did not get in, don't spoil it for others, and don't blame the school for the fact that you didn't get into one of the best CS graduate programs on the planet

MIIS reject. Why didn't they tell us of the effect of deferrals, No GRE has been a way of looting money like hell & playing with candidate's feelings, same happening with every university, bloody cash cows, expecting the same thing from MCDS results.

CMU MS ML really be like we will give out the results in Feb and don't until now. CMU peeps please give a date instead of a "couple of days"!

Rejected. 2 International Papers, 2 International Awards, 3 internships, 2 research internships, 1 startup, 1 year work-ex, GPA-3.88. Congrats to all those who got in!
