phone call from recruitment chair, would have been notified earlier but typo in application. 2 years research, one co-author publication in process. Early interview, Feb 2nd-4th.

Received email asking me to check portal for decision. No Interview call

Interview weekend Feb 28-March 1

Received an email directing me to check the website.

Contacted by phone from a different faculty than applied under but invited to interview for an opening in their lab for similar research, and then received the email invite later that day.

Email to check website, rejection letter waiting there. I had emailed the department​ in recent weeks with no reply. Rejection number 10, getting really disheartened.

Please can someone explain to me what does this mean ? Are they offering me a spot next term (Spring/Fall 19) or does this mean if, someone drops decides not to go they will inform me? Or is it just a more polite way of saying that I am rejected, in that case this would be my 11th rejection. Your name has therefore been placed on an alternate list from which we will choose if vacancies occur. If a vacancy should occur, we will notify you promptly by email.
