One first author paper on ApJ

Emailed them to request information on my application. Got an automated email to check website a couple of hours later (no clue if timing was related to my email). The website waitlist notice said: "The Astronomy Admissions Committee admitted only a small fraction of applicants this year. The responses to our initial offers of admission are being monitored closely, and we anticipate that a final decision on your application will be made around April 15."

So excited!! Received the email earlier today. No interviews. 1 First Author publication, 3 strong LORs, and previous research collaboration with one of the POIs. Focusing on cosmology/simulations.

Indian student, 3.74/4.00 UG GPA, 3 summer research projects (one in astronomy). No publications. Couple of months of TA experience. A professor with whom I had been in touch with personally emailed me about the rejection. Haven't got the official notification yet.

Disappointed :(

2 years research abroad and domestic, good LORs, strong SOP. Disappointed.

Received an email. 226 applications and smaller cohort due to COVID. 3.94 GPA, 3+ years of research (school + summer research). 3 very good LORs from well known people in the field. This was my safety school.

The Department of Astronomy received 221 applications for the Autumn 2021 class, which was a record number. This year, in response to financial and other pressures resulting from the worldwide COVID-19 outbreak, Ohio State University put a strict cap on the total number of graduate students in each program. This is to ensure that all current students and those we admit for Autumn 2021 are fully supported with fellowships or with research/teaching assistantships. As a result, the size of our incoming class will be much smaller than usual, and we were simply unable to offer admission to most applicants who would normally qualify for our program.

Emailed the department and told rejected. The results will be sent out by the end of this week. Said they were only able to accommodate less than 2 percent of the applicants...
