Unofficial acceptance email from POI

Received email that an update was posted on my portal. Knew it was a rejection because I didn't even get an interview :(

This was my #1 choice, I am ecstatic!!

It came as a surprise. I had conversations with professors from Columbia, who were actively promoting their program to me, persuading me to apply there instead of to any other related programs. Having obtained my master's degree from a top-ranked university, my advisor was confident that all I needed to do was apply to this program, as they would surely accept me, and I wouldn't need to consider any other options. Thankfully, I didn't take his advice.

rejected from the PhD, accepted to the MA. south asian subfield. unsure whether i will accept.

Received an email notification from the application portal notifying me of the decision. The faculty member who would have been my advisor if I had been accepted also emailed me directly letting me know the decision.

Waitlisted for my top choice program. If you've been admitted and know you are going to attend somewhere else please decline your offer so the department can notify people on the waitlist!!!
