It came as a surprise. I had conversations with professors from Columbia, who were actively promoting their program to me, persuading me to apply there instead of to any other related programs. Having obtained my master's degree from a top-ranked university, my advisor was confident that all I needed to do was apply to this program, as they would surely accept me, and I wouldn't need to consider any other options. Thankfully, I didn't take his advice.
