I'm not one of the original posters but I was similarly rejected from Columbia's PhD program yet accepted to the MA. Wanted to note that I had submitted an application to both the PhD program and the MA program, rather than having only submitted a PhD application and then accepted to the MA after being rejected. Email notification -> on website, there was a new application created "Fall 2020 MA" whereas before both applications were grouped under a single "Fall 2020 PhD". Letter says: While the faculty of the Department of Sociology was not able to offer you admission to its doctoral program, it has decided to offer you admission to the MA program, beginning in the Fall 2020 semester. Although your application to the doctoral program was strong, the Faculty Admissions Committee was able to admit only a small percentage of this year's extremely competitive PhD applicants. The program to which you have been admitted culminates in the degree of Master of Arts. |
