Physics Graduate School Admission Results

I co-authored a publication with a Prof. (a name in the field) from UC Berkeley. I was in contact with two Caltech faculty members from my subfield back in December and both were greatly encouraging: one telling me he's on the admissions committee and the other offering to chat over Zoom. About a month ago I found out that my most recent letter of recommendation is a bit sketchy, a risk I took by doing a master's in Germany (context: famous group, terrible atmosphere). Nuclear / High Energy (Experimental). Bachelor's in Physics at Univ. of Washington, 1.5 years in a scientific position at a Department of Energy National Laboratory. No Publication. 6 years of independent research that involves a lot of hands-on work. Both rejections on the same day - hit hard. But lessons learned - I am not qualified yet nor ready yet. Was interviewed in Jan. After zero acceptances last season I got into my top choice as an international HEPTh applicant! Dreams do come true…
