"Your application for admission to the Ph.D. program in the Department of English at Stanford University has been carefully reviewed. I regret to inform you that the department is not able to admit you to the program. As you may know, our program is an extremely small one, with a typical incoming cohort of only 8-9 students. There are thus a great many more qualified candidates than available positions, making our task especially onerous. I can assure you that these are very difficult decisions, and the entire faculty approaches the process with extraordinary care and consideration. We regret that due to restricted resources it is not possible to provide applicants with an individual response regarding admission. I wish that the Admissions Committee had happier news to convey. We very much appreciate your interest in Stanford University and wish you all the best for the future."

I am an earlier unofficial POI phone call poster. Received official email. My friend in a different sub-field received his email and phone call too. Not posting research sub-field due to anonymity. Good to everybody else!

TTPB: I am not in he-th, but I have talked to many professors (from different schools) who usually sit in admissions committees. The single most important factor is LORs. Not only do the LORs have to be exceptional, the LORs should be from people who the admission committee knows and trusts (unfortunately, this is not possible for everyone). If you have the above two, rest of the application becomes irrelevant.
