  • EUI does have scholarships for non-EU students - I don't know exactly how many though. Don't be discouraged to accept your offer, if this is your concern. Besides, I think EUI is a great and unique place to do research.

Rochester(Economics, PhD (F18)Other via E-mail on 14 Apr 2018 I14 Apr 2018
  • To the poster below: since they said they are going to make a decision only after April 15, the smartest thing you can do is to accept the offer at hand and in case Rochester give you an offer ask for a release from the department that you accepted the offer. I was told that this is completely standard it happens all the time and there is no case in which a release is not granted.

University Of Rochester(Economics, PhD (F18)Accepted via E-mail on 14 Apr 2018 I14 Apr 2018
  • I have just declined a funded offer from University of Rochester. My impressions after talk with some Professors is that the Department of Economics is an outstanding department. The Professors are very close to students, they intend to contract two full Professor to compensate the leave of Yongsung Chang (he is leaving for personal reasons). For those in interest in Macroeconomics and are in the waitlist for Rochester, I was told by faculty members that Professors Mark Bills and Narayana are completely immersed in the graduate program, which means they are active in research and are willing to be advisors. One member of the faculty of Rochester, told me that Narayana could be more selective in choosing students to work with him, but he is so open that virtually all students who desire to work with him are accepted. Currently, there are two students working with him and he is also involved in the creation of a department of public policy in University of Rochester, which will be a great opportunity for those looking to work as RA and bring visiting scholars to the department of economics. There are also other outstanding members in the Macro body (e.g., Yan Bai). The placement of University of Rochester is also pretty good and in my personal opinion is better than in other similar departments in the top 10 - top 20 cohort. In the last a student got a position in NYU. Just to finish, the grade of the course is really something that attracted me a lot, since they have in the first year besides the core courses (Macro, Micro and Econometris), Math course during the first year. The Professor of the Math course in the first year is Hard, who is know as being a outlier in Math and able to teach everything that students demand. This is something good, since I would like to study Math more deeper and the department I am going there is no all these courses in the first year and I will have some TA responsibilities during my first year, which means it is harder to deal with 4 courses per semester. I am talking more about Macro, since this is the field of my interest, but for those waiting for Rochester I think is interesting know that they intend to become even stronger in Macro and Theory, since this is the tradition created by Lionel McKenzie and they intend to invest even more in both fields. Apparently the department has a vey close relationship between students and Professors and they are committed in develop their program and become even more in research. Just to finish I think for those waiting and who consequently get the offer you can go there with any kind of concern in your mind, since this is a very good department. I was really in doubt between go there or to UC San Diego or UCLA. At the end I had made my mind to go to Rochester because UC San Diego is very good in Econometrics and since I am interested in Macro, have the opportunity to work with Narayana is something unique. UCLA in general is better ranked, but their funding was vey poor to the expensed I would have in LA. Good luck to those on the WL, and when they get you the offer go without any doubt, it is a top-natch department. I hope this information help people in doubt about the quality of Rochester.
