Got rejection without interview but got interviewed from better ranking schools.
I suppose it is a good thing because they are interviewing students that have relatively high prob to join.
U Florida, mentioned in the post below , are one of the schools that are doing the opposite: giving campus interviews to very competitive applicants but probably too good to join them in the first place.
I'm being normative or saying which way is better but each department does have different recruiting strategy.

Finance, University of Florida My personal experience: For international students that are not staying in the US, don't apply for non-top-tier campus visiting schools, like Rice, Florida, Arizona State, Penn State. Except you are super great, you would not invite you for interviews since your travel cost is much higher than others; they don't lack decent applicants anyways.
