I want to thank you for applying for admission to the Graduate Program of the Department of Sociology and the Department of Community and Environmental Sociology at UW-Madison for Fall 2025. The Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee has made its final decisions, and I am sorry to report that we are unable to offer you admission to the program. The committee thoroughly examines each application and considers a wide range of factors when selecting applicants, including academic record, test scores, transcripts, statement of purpose and applicant's goals, letters of reference, writing sample, previous research experience, fit with our program, and the probability of each candidate's success in the type of program we offer. No one of these factors outweighs the others: rather they are examined in combination. Regrettably, we have far more qualified and deserving applicants than we can possibly admit. This year, we reviewed 424 applications, approximately 50 percent more than the previous year. Furthermore, due to changes in our graduate program, we now admit many fewer students than we have in the past. As a result, many fine applicants are tinned away from our program. Our decisions about admission should therefore not be taken as a judgment about your overall potential for graduate study. Many who are refused here go elsewhere and do superbly. We hope that will be the case for you. We appreciate the time and effort invested in your application, and we wish you the very best in your studies elsewhere and in your future career. Sincerely,

Super surprised and happy. Good fit, 2.5 years of research, strong letters. Had a few bad semesters in college which I addressed in my app. RA experience overlaps particularly well with faculty interests.

Admitted to Masters, no funding yet

Applied to the PhD but was accepted to the Masters program instead. No funding info yet.

I have years of research experience and published papers in top journals, but I hadn’t received any offers until now. This is my first offer, and I’m absolutely thrilled. Wishing everyone success in finding a place they’re excited about!

Was a reach, congrats to anyone admitted!

2 completed first author publications, another one under review, presentations at 3 national conferences, and tons of research experiences. I worked so hard on my statements, had great LORs, and really thought I’d be a good fit. Utterly devastated :(
