Guys, I am on the process right now and it has been really hard. Do you believe that the age is a problem? I am 32 years old and I feel that competing with person of less than 30 years is hard. What age do you believe is the best for applying and what is the cut off?

I will tell you one thing that matters almost all of us. The reason why some people ask others to decide as fast as possible is the following. If you take your time, let's say decided on April 14th, the schools you rejected will admit other students. These students will decide April 15th lets say or even sooner but then the schools they reject will try to reach others, so on so forth. The major reason why people ask you to be hurry is 1min passed in April 16th, none of the schools send new offers. They changes class size, admit less people than expected, which is inefficient in our point of view. We, including all of us, tried so hard to come thus far and will probably meet at conferences and review each others articles in journals. So, be kind and polite each other and keep in mind that you are not the only one deciding about your life. It is a huge point in our lives as well. So, take all the time you need but be as much as possible so that you can help others. Don't forget the domino effect and ruin others' dreams by deciding at the very last minute. At the very least, reject until last 2 offers stands, don't decide on 7 schools at the last moment. Sorry for long post but one of us needed to do that. (P.S: some of us may have done well in past more than others and have more offers too but you are a part of the profession in here and the domino starts with you, and probably have taken micro classes. So let us reach to Pareto Optimal point)

From my experience of a Masters program here in US, I strongly feel like the Universities in big cities are not giving students enough money to survive barely. I had to borrow money, work off-campus, even after getting a full stipend. $1500 in New York/ Chicago/ California is barely equivalent to $500 in many other states like Kansas/Texas. My friend on partial funding in Texas lived there quite comfortably. I think universities in big cities should double/triple the payment for the students to have an equivalent living standard. This time I am taking it very seriously in choosing university for my PhD.

To the poster below, I'm sorry to hear you haven't received funding. It's always a bummer. However, I think your approach is wrong. First, there is absolutely no requirement you go to an Ivy to get funding. Most of the funded American students I know here were top students at top-25 universities, yes, but considering how competitive funding is, taking the best students from the best universities doesn't seem insane. I also know some who were top students then had incredibly impressive work experience that certainly helped them get funding. I also know many that went to non-Oxbridge universities in the UK and got funding. Of course, there is considerably less funding available from Oxford than from PhD programs at US universities, and I agree the University should do a better job about admitting how few funded spots actually available to applicants, particularly as their '1,100' figure includes Rhodes and are overwhelmingly in the sciences, meaning humanities and social sciences have very few. However, to assume that it's some elitist conspiracy against you is to discount the fact that there might simply have been better applicants than you. I am sorry to hear you didn't get funding -- I also have not received any -- but I think it's ridiculous and arrogant to assume it could only be because of elitism. Oxford is one of the best universities in the world and attracts many of the best students; some will in fact be better students than you are and will therefore be chosen for the few funded spots. Best of luck in future applications or work.

To all those who got accepted into programs this year: Congratulations! That's a HUGE accomplishment. To those who weren't extended an offer, you should be proud that you went through the process and/or got offered an interview. Just applying to programs is INCREDIBLY stressful and by applying you showed the type of mettle needed to succeed in a grad program. Use what you've learned from interviews and acceptances/rejections and go even HARDER next cycle. Took me 3 years, trust me, you'll get there too.

To all grad schools, I don't know what the hell you all are doing, but it is so indolent and insolent of you not even bother telling applicants whether they are on waitlists or rejected. Some schools not even care to reply to mails checking status. Screw you all, I am so tired of waiting.

your awful attitude and unnecessary entitlement is totally why you got rejected and they are not responding to you because you probably come off as aggressive in your emails. please take note, people: submitting an application never guarantees anything and it shouldn't be expected that you'll get in somewhere. congrats to everyone who got in to the place they wanted to be!!
