OISE MT (J/I And I/S), University Of Toronto I got an email from UofT Graduate Studies saying that there has been an update to my application status (at 1:10pm EST). I logged on to the application portal and was able to access my conditional offer of admission letters (at first I thought I only got results for one of the programs, but checked the other to be sure and saw it was there)! This is by far my top program (specifically the I/S stream) and I can't wait to start in the Fall!!!

Sociology, University Of Wisconsin-Madison The Sociology PHD (L&S); program has recommended you for the next step in the application process. The Graduate School needs an official transcript from your bachelor's degree-granting institution. UW-Madison students do not need to send transcripts, since we have access to them. What does this mean?????

Anthropology, UC RIVERSIDE On May 16, I received an email indicating "A decision has been reached on your graduate application. Please visit your status page to access your decision letter." This update indicated a rejection. Before the April 15 deadline to submit an intent to enroll, I reached out to a professor at UCR and they advised that I had not been accepted to the program. For future applicants, contact out to someone in the department, and don't wait to hear from their grad division dean!

Economics, UC Santa Barbara I know it's admissions season, and I wanted to offer a little insider context to students considering doing their PhD at UCSB. Basically, the takeaway is that you should avoid UCSB if you can. It's a good program with decent name ID, but it has been the environment here has been significantly worse than what I had envisioned when I started, and I mostly regret not taking an offer at a slightly lower ranked program when I was a prospective student. Here are some reasons: - It is difficult to understate how abysmal the facilities are. There is one room for group study that is almost always occupied by a TA holding office hours, and, if you are lucky enough to get access to that room, the only white board is completely stained and mostly unusable. The building is old. The offices are small and cramped. It's just not a physical environment that is conducive to learning. - It's difficult to compare professors across similarly ranked universities, but teaching (undergrads and grad students) is not a priority for the UCSB faculty. The professors that are doing the best research are seem particularly ineffective at teaching students to become better researchers. I have been really surprised by the egos of the professors at UCSB as well. With very few exceptions, our faculty are a bunch of MRM no names, but they have really fragile egos that you have to be super careful managing. - First year students have a substantial TA load, and there was sort of a bloodbath with prelims last year (all on the same micro test). Most of us were really surprised that just 10/15 passed (after a few years of everyone making it through). - The pay is bad (but improving after the UC strikes), and Santa Barbara is EXPENSIVE. - It's a bad environment for women, especially women who aren't white. There is a culture with a lot of dating within the department (there are three different couples among the faculty), which is not inherently a problem. But, we also recently allowed GC to start working with students again after he went on a hiatus for sexually harassment, and there was a lot of noise on twitter this fall about how his former student is doing the same thing in his new TT job. - Placement for the median JMC is mediocre. Yes, top JMCs usually get TT jobs, but most of us don't. My sense is that industry really does not draw much distinction between a 30th and 40th ranked program, and so it just seems better to be happy at a ~40th ranked school than unhappy at ~30th. I also look back and wonder if I would have been better off at the top of my cohort in a lower ranked program.

Fluency in a critical language. Worked improving college access for marginalized students, taught English in Asia, also worked in consulting for major multinational organizations, NPOs and blue chip companies.

Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University Current non-CS domestic undergrad at CMU, received an email containing my decision (unable to access portal anymore). 1yr research, 1 big tech internship, very stoked as I was not expecting this at all!

Physics, University Of Virginia I got an email informing me to check the website and an email to access SIS. At this stage, I speculated it must be the acceptance letter, which was confirmed after I opened the portal. I did not have any interviews, nor have general GRE scores (which was compulsory), I emailed them while applying that I could not give the general GRE, but I do have a 960 score in the physics GRE. They waived the general GRE requirement with ease (They also sent me the email of the application fee waiver by accident :P). Now I got the email of acceptance (with 5 years of funding). I will contact the faculty and discuss the research work there to make my decision to accept or reject them.
