Physics, Massachusetts Institute Of Technology Double major in physics/engineering, 14 months equivilent full time research experience across two major projects and several minor projects including one I won funding for, 1 year TA/LA experiencing, 1 publication (not first author), several posters, and senior thesis (unpublished). I think there was a lack of fit between my interests and department research, on top of generally high competition (1700~ people for 40 slots).

Physics, Massachusetts Institute Of Technology A bit surprising since I had a very promising interview in which they said things like "you'd be a perfect fit" but that's OK. I was interviewed for PSFC despite my primary interest being experimental particle physics. Good luck to everyone else!

Physics, UIUC Cosmo-th. 1 paper under review from Master's thesis (preprint on arXiv). Projects on Blackhole, string theory, particle physics, quantum gravity, dark matter/energy, galaxy and gravitational wave. No exceptional recos but 2 strong ones.

Physics, Rutgers University Ignore waitlist. I saw someone getting accepted to the physics prog at Rutgers whereas my application has still not gone under review. Do any of you people know anything or are in the same boat? Kind of feels weird

Physics, SUNY Stony Brook Received a mail from graduate coordinator that said, ''While we are still reviewing applications and making our decisions, and it will be a few weeks until the final decisions are made, I think it will be quite unlikely you will be admitted to our PhD program. The competition for places in your area of interest is especially intense. I hope you will receive other offers and continue your progress in theoretical physics!''

Physics, New York University Astrostats + observation. ~1.5 years research experience, 2 first author pubs in ApJ, a few talks/posters, strong LORs, strong statement, no big awards, no GRE, no teaching experience. Emailed potential advisors in October + November but was ignored. No interview. Honestly a little surprised because my physics background is relatively weak. 4/0/5 accept/reject/waiting. Virtual visit March 31 - April 1.

Physics, University Of California, Santa Barbara Email to check portal. Hep-Ex (Dark Matter, Neutrinos). Also got in last year, and tried to defer. Dept of Physics wanted to grant my deferral, but the grad division denied the deferral application. Honors degree from top-ranked public school. 1 summer REU in dark matter physics, 2 years undergrad research in liquid xenon physics, currently post-bacc at Los Alamos working on DUNE.
