Creative Writing Poetry, Vanderbilt University English minor, health allied major. Had some excellent recommendations and a strong resume (volunteered teaching creative writing to high schoolers, some publication history). I did specifically mention wanting to write with Rita Dove, but heard later from a mentor that apparently her health is suffering right now and she is not teaching very actively, which may have affected their consideration. They were my #4 school.

Creative Writing Poetry, Johns Hopkins University English minor, health allied major. Had some excellent recommendations and a strong resume (volunteered teaching creative writing to high schoolers, some publication history). I did screw up the critique essay-- the prompt on the website and the prompt in the application form were different and I had written based on what was on the website (analyzed someone else's work rather than my own). Attached an apology letter to the front of the critique explaining the situation. Not sure if this was what caused the rejection or if they just didn't really vibe with my sample. They were my #5 school.

English, University Of Pennsylvania OMG! I had been grieving HARD thinking I was rejected for the last two weeks after I saw acceptances come out, which hurt so much because I was also interviewed and this is my dream program, but I just found out and I feel over the moon. I won't ask anyone to speed up their decisions because I find that to be inconsiderate, but I do hope that I have a chance and I am just AHHH so happy no matter what happens. 3a/1w/9r

English And Comparative Literature, Columbia University Received an email informing me of portal update. Rejected for PhD program, but currently being considered for MA program. Congratulations to all those admitted! 1a/2w/4r/4p

English, Loyola University Chicago Master's GPA was 4.0. Was somewhat taken aback by outright rejection; the admissions officer had stated that my application was awaiting review about a week ago, but that decisions would be made by the end of February. Given that someone with the same undergraduate and postgraduate grades as me was accepted, I figured that undergrad GPA wouldn't be an automatic disqualifier before review, but the number of waitlist offers from mid-February suggests that some applications weren't read before waitlist decisions were made, which kind of sucks.

English, James Madison University This program is my first choice—truly hoping it turns into an acceptance! GPA isn't the highest so I think my SOP, writing sample, resume, and rec letters caught their attention. Grateful regardless :)
