Computer Science, University Of Toronto I reached out to a professor last year whose work matched my interest. I had no research experience and my schools were all online. Ever since that day I've been working with his lab. Final masters GPA not computed as yet, currently stands around 3.75 but will likely increase to 3.8-3.9 by the end of my masters

MPhil In Machine Learning And Machine Intelligence, University Of Cambridge Machine Learning track. Ranked 4th in my bachelor's program, two strong letters of recommendation, decent motivation statement (though always cringe retrospectively), two years of work experience, (not sure if it matters that much but) strong extracurricular activities and leadership roles. Came from a top 100-150 European university, and really thought the interview did not go too well; still a bit in shock but happy that it has (so far) worked out! :)

Biology, Clemson University Got word from the possible advisor I was hoping to work under; said interest were too broad. Didn't think being considered for a rotation position was my only option saying I only wanted to research under him. Yikes! This was my safety

Nuclear Engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Professor reached out to me directly and set up an interview. Interview lasted 2.5 hours and mostly consisted of sharing research interests and experience. I have a BS in chemistry and he's looking for a chemist to join his research group and my prior work uses the same compounds that his current work does.
