Generic rejection. hep ex.

Got acceptance and offer letter via email, since I submitted my application to department graduate coordinator via email. Have a 1st author publication and 2years of research experiences in addition to Masters thesis. I was in contact with Prof. Lloyd Bumm.

OMG! I was just feeling very sad about the rejection from Stanford and then received the email to check the portal! Hep-th. No pubs.

hep-th (quantum gravity / cosmology). To be honest, I am thankful that I have been admitted to HPMS but I am feeling a bit lost as to whether to pursue hep-th or a PhD at all (I am considering jobs unrelated to physics). I have had professors explicitly discouraging me from pursuing quantum gravity and have met jaded PhD graduates of the most famous hep-th professors (when I was interning in the industry). My own experiences in hep-th have been intellectually fulfilling but it is sometimes difficult to tell if my work is related to the real world---the essence of physics seems to be missing. I have started looking at CMT (especially topological materials) but it still seems to have limited applicability in practice. To the applicants out there, how did you know you wanted to pursue a PhD and what are your post-PhD plans? For the hep-th applicants out there, why do you want to do hep-th?

Actually waitlisted. “The department regards you as an outstanding potential candidate for admission and we have placed you on our wait list for admission. However, since we have only a limited number of full-funding offers that we may make, we are not yet able to make a final decision on your application. We hope to get a better sense of the resources available to us, and thus be able to determine whether we might be able to offer you admission with funding, by April 15.”

Notified that after the first round of review, I was waitlisted and if they move to a second round, they will consider the waitlisted applicants again. Email the graduate coordinator to know your status!

Ignore interview. They invited me to the open house session. I have no idea about what is an open house. Someone, please explain to me about the open house. Does everyone get this invitation?

Hep-th, had two years of exp in CMP-th (1 pre-print) and contacted PI. Gutted.
