Answer to question "Were you partially funded at all or receive any research assistantship? Do most Masters students generally just fund themselves?" Generally Master's students fund themselves, but I guess I am pretty lucky, I got a partial assistantship (enough to cover living cost in US, but NOT covering the tuition fee) while doing research with POI since Summer 2014.
