Rejected after asking through email about status

I received a generic mail from Dr. Richard Sowers informing me of my rejection

I got into their Physics PhD program so was expecting the rejection.

Official acceptance via email, will be declining

3 preprints + 1 paper. Email but no portal update.

Email, no portal update.

They said they had received 900 applications. Oh well.

Emailed to check portal in the morning, checked portal, got an interview call. Email said over 900 applications were received and hence they were going to conduct interviews this time. 2 Preprints. 1 Publication in algebraic geometry. One LoR from faculty in UIUC.

I did not submit GRE scores. I did an REU this last summer. I have written a single-author research paper that has been submitted to a journal. I have been doing research at my school for a while and have taken every math course in pure and applied math that we offer. I want to stress that I do not have any research experience in differential geometry which is what is one of the main things I applied to do.

Asian male. Want to study probability-related stuff. ECE B.Sc with research projects in communication/signal processing/probability. 3 rec. from advisors who have mentored me for at least a year for study/research. No Publication. (I suck) GPA: 4.18/4.3.

Received invitation to virtual open house sent out to all who "were either admitted to our PhD program in mathematics or are on our long waiting list." No updates in the portal or contact from the program otherwise, so likely the latter.
