Your application for admission to the Structural Engineering program at Stanford University has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. We regret to inform you that the committee did not recommend you for admission to our program. Because the number of applicants far exceeds the number that can be admitted, the process of making choices is difficult and painstaking. Each year, many strong candidates must be turned down. These decisions are made conscientiously by the faculty members, who have significant experience with this process. We thank you for your interest in our program and wish you much continued success in your educational pursuits. Sincerely, Admissions Committee Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering Stanford University

No publications. Get published kids or you're out of luck, at least for hep-th. The first of what I anticipate to be a long list of rejections. I guess this is what safety schools are for.

Deliberations have been going on for a while -- PhD students in my lab have been gone for hours at a time to help the admissions committee. I assume that if they told me that admissions decisions were finalized, it means that they'll release them soon.
