Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University TTPB: Compare to the people who get into these schools? At least this year your profile 'is' average (not the whole pool but the pool that got accepted). There are so many applicants with more than 3+ publications in top conferences, whether that is a good phenomenon I don't know but it is what it is at the current stage. I know one person who got into Stanford has 5 publications in Neurips, ICML, and ICRL... don't even know why that person even needs a Ph.D.

Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University TTPB. I think I would be the best judge for my profile, in MY field and trust me I have enough indicators from other good schools for the same. Although I didn't mention that this is one of the top profile, but I would certain not call it average. Even if it is average, how does that justify a professor willing to take you on but can't because of the strong hold of a committee who is infamous for their weird criteria of rejection. I have also heard that the dropout rate for CMU is very high. This definitely makes me wonder that the randomness factor is extremely high for CMU.

Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University Applied to ML and LTI. Interviewed by profs in LTI mid Jan (thought it went well—they were definitely nice). Rejected by LTI a few days ago and ML today. 3.97gpa dual degree math and CS in top 20 US university. GRE 169Q, 166V, 5.0A. Research, papers, posters, Google/Microsoft internships, national research scholarships. What can I say—crazy year for AI/ML admissions. Congrats to those who got in and good luck to the rest to find a good fit somewhere else.

Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University TTPB: Dude, honestly with the current situation of AI/ML your profile is average in the pool (good in other fields). So don't bash CMU, from what I know CMU is one of the few top schools that actually even give students with fewer publications a chance and read your SOP closely while Stanford just weeds out based on your profile. Don't really know about MIT...

Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University (ML Department). Background: MS CS from a top university for AI in the US. 1 first author publication in a top ML theory conference. Undergrad from a tier 1 engineering institute in India. Low undergraduate GPA (7.6/10), but that was in 5 years ago. Masters GPA 3.95. I had only heard that CMU metrics were weird, and now I have seen them. I had spoken with a professor who would have admitted me had I passed the first round. If this is their way of selecting candidates, is CMU even a dream school? I am sure MIT, Stanford have a more clear criteria of selecting candidates. CMU isn't so great in TCS anyway! P.S. By top I mean ranked within top 15 of US news and top 10 engineering schools in India.
