Applied to the economics cognate. I contacted a few professors in the department prior to submitting my application to discuss my interest in the program and got useful feedback. I met virtually with the director of the program and had a very productive discussion. However, at the end of the discussion, he asked me if I was an international student. I said yes, and felt that it marked the end of my journey to U-Mich, and it indeed was. First rejection of the cycle.
