Hi fellow NIU poster! I did receive an interview, and had a nice time, but the program had a few flags for me. First, the PIs talked a lot about not liking drama, and the grad students shared that there were folks in the program who had switched labs because of interpersonal conflict. Clearly lab cohesion was on the brain. Additionally, one of investigators works closely with police officers on a project with "blue lives" in the title. When I inquired about how this project has interfaced with the black lives matter movement, or whether the PI had received any push-back about the name, no one seemed to have an answer. As an activist, I found this a bit alarming. Finally - and this is very picky - the restaurants in DeKalb certainly leave something to be desired if you're used to having access to a bustling foodie scene. It could be the perfect pick for someone! It just was not for me, and it seems that feeling was mutual. Best of luck!
