To the person I was conversing with: Gotcha. And yes, now that's flat-out wrong. Having a good fit doesn't guarantee admission, especially at a school that's as selective as Princeton. There are literally more than a hundred students who think they're a good fit for the program and a professor, and hence apply. Getting into these schools is never "really easy," no matter what your expertise is. That person totally underestimated how hard it is to get into a Ph.D. program and gave you advice that's out of touch with reality. I wish you luck in getting into other schools, though.
