To the poster below: I have the very same concerns, but I think we need some further clarifications regarding the job market. I think that if your supervisor is a top professor who devotes a lot of time to you (as it seems to be at Rice), it could be even better than attending a top-20 program and being supervised by a not-so-top professor. Maybe we should gather some other info by contacting some of them (e.g. Merlo)
