To the posters below, Maryland really sends impersonal letters and deals with their applicants as ... I did an MA in my home country and another MA in Applied Linguistics in the UK. I applied to this school two years ago and got rejected. When I contacted the director and asked about what made my application insufficient, they told me that I had no sufficient background in theoretical linguistics. I did another MA in theoretical linguistics here in the US and then applied to Maryland again. I received an email from them in which I was asked to JUSTIFY why I did three MAs. A few weeks later, I got rejected!!
