Note

I am not writing this to invent a reason for my situation, but I have a feeling that both Columbia and Stony Brook rejects strong applicants. I know people who has 2 or 4 offers from top 5 schools, and who still got rejections from Stony, Columb. And I do not think the problem is really related to being a good match, I think it would have been wiser if they asked strong ones if they plan on to attend, and withdraw in case of negative responses.
