  • Didn't get into the PhD but "admission was extended to me" into the MA program. To those who know USC, is there any chance of getting financial support as an MA student at USC?

  • To the poster below. I talked to a second year student and I was told 3 left before comps because they had been kicked out due to low grades and 5 failed comps twice and kicked out. That's over 40 percent who don't make it to the second year. That's an insane attrition rate! I couldn't risk wasting 2 years of my life with those odds and went somewhere else. To the one who was worried, I hope you canceled your offer and went someone else, it didn't seem like a place that cared about their students at all.

  • Applied with an Master's GPA. Visited in mid March with a fellowship from another school at hand, met with a few professors and students, and sat in on a few classes. Received a matching fellowship soon after, have already accepted the offer. 6a/5r/0w. The passing rate for comps at NCSU aren't as bad as the poster below said. Out of last year's cohort of ~15, I've heard that two students decided that they didn't want a PhD after all and left before comps, and they kicked one or two out for failing comps twice. Typical attrition rates these days are around 50%. To those who will be attending NCSU, I'm excited to meet you all and let's make sure we have a tight-knit study group!

  • To post requesting info below: Math B.S. Econ M.A Grad GPA 3.92 Was accepted a while back, received fellowship package on 4/16. To below about academic jobs: It's more about what you do once you get into the school (and what your goals are). Yeah, you're probably not going to get to teach at top 30 school. But others may be more than happy teaching at a state school (which is more than just a possibility). Current professors at my MA program think quite highly of this program GIVEN its ranking. "It places quite well". But I wasn't aware of the attrition fact.

  • To the poster below, it is an implicit rejection. I experienced this 2 years ago, they say nothing about my decision. I sent an email to ask Sonya Woolley at the department and she never reply. Students there said the same thing goes for insiders. Horrible management system.

  • Received funding last week after being accepted late february. Had happily accepted a strictly dominant offer. To the poster below who was told not to go here just wanted to add: their first year prelim attrition rate is notoriously high. Even if I didnt have better offers, I would not have taken this one (had another couple of offers at similar ranked school).

  • Talked to a 5th year student after accepting offer. Told me directly I shouldn't go to this school if I want an academic job :( I still have an offer from another school with a 4/20 deadline. Would I be allowed to cancel an accepted offer ? Is that allowed ?
